  • From loose dentures to implants

Two years of dentures that would not stay in, and what eating, talking and laughing are like with implants.

    Read the transcript
Why did you decide to get this procedure?
The reason that I chose to go in for the procedures that Dr. Orr offers is because I had had my dentures for possibly two years, a year and a half.
What problems were you having with your dentures?
They had gotten to where at first they were great. Even if they were relying there at the last, they got to where they would not stay in. I used a tremendous amount of the Fixodent and all the, the products that's offered for that, and that was not very successful before I decided to have the procedure done, the dentures were very loose. I started out in the morning with the Fixodent and all the go stuff. It would be by mid-morning. I'd have to reglue by lunchtime. You'd have to reglue. You could be talking and my top dentures would just fall down, which was rather embarrassing.
How did it affect what you could eat?
When I had my dentures, before I had this procedure done, I had to watch what I ate, anything sticky. You might come out with teeth and all, you know, but I could not eat anything like boiled corn. I could not eat beef jerky. I could not eat peanut brittle things of that sort. After I've had the procedure done, there is nothing that I have not been able to eat that I have found yet, and I'm very satisfied with what I have had done.
How did they make you feel comfortable?
His nurse at the time I went to school with, so I felt very comfortable there with them. The whole, the whole atmosphere at Dr. Orr's is just calm, relaxing, very kind. I've always had a fear of going to the dentist. I've never felt that fear. With Dr. Orr, you go in there, he's, he explains everything so calmly. He works at your pace. You know, he, he takes his time doing things and he tells you what he's doing. He tells you what he's gonna do. He makes sure you're comfortable.
    Would you recommend sedation?
If I had to recommend this to anyone, I would tell them to trust Dr. Orr on the decision of sedation that they receive, because it is rather painful if it's just numbed up. As long as you do what he tells you, it's gonna be a breeze and it's gonna pay off in the long run.
How has this changed your life?
There's no way I can describe the difference in my life from before and after. The implants make it much easier to eat. You're more confident in speaking, more confident in laughing and having a good time like you would have normally. This has been such a relief to me. It has made you feel like you can get out and be in public again.
  • Three hours of dental work in one visit, under sedation

A bad experience with a crown elsewhere, then two crowns, a root canal and a filling done here in one sedated visit.

    Read the transcript
What led to your dental anxiety?
I had a, an experience a few years ago with a crown, which was my first crown, and that crown had to be redone multiple times. There were some issues with temporary coming out, and then the permanent that came in was incorrect. So I had to redo all of that. And just through that whole experience is something that just kind of brought about dental anxiety for the first time. And I really didn't wanna go through that process again.
What dental work did you need done?
In a previous dentist, I just, you know, I needed a potential root canal and at least one crown, which ended up turning into needing two crowns, a root canal, and a filling around the same time. That's not something that I wanted to go through without sedation or some, some form of assistance with that. I went in to talk to Dr. Orr about having a crown and a root canal done what ended up needing two crowns, a root canal in a small filling on the side of the tooth that adjoins it. And that ended up being well over three hours of work in the chair. So you can imagine what that would've been like if you were completely awake and, and normal. During that process of time.
Why did you consider sedation dentistry?
I had first heard about sedation dentistry kind of just in a general way. Over time I'd heard other people use it and that kind of thing, but I didn't have any firsthand experience with it. But I sought it out, did some internet research to, to understand more about it. So did some research on that. I found that there were several options but I also found out that most dentists' offices don't provide that service. It's kind of a small fraction of the dentist out there that do it, kind of a specialty thing.
How did you find Dr. Orr?
But I looked around a little bit and found Dr. Orr's office in Winchester, which is actually very close by, and had a consult with him, and that's how that started.
What was your initial consultation like?
The experience is, you know, quite good. I had a consult with him at first to understand, you know, number one, to get his opinion on the work that I needed to have done, and then also to understand what options that he could provide and how that whole process worked from sort of the beginning of the process throughout the process. And it actually gave me some pretty good hope that that experience was gonna be pretty good, and he was very reassuring with it.
What was the sedation process like?
And then as far as the actual process that was done it was quite easy, really. The biggest anxiety I had probably was just about the process before, while, while the process was being scheduled, but actually the day, the day before I had a prescription that I used at night to make sure that I slept well. I had a prescription to start out with that morning before the trip to his office. And really, to be honest, that's about all I remember of that day was just about halfway getting to his office. This process was over three hours worth of work done in a chair at one period of time. And that could have been spread out over multiple visits. Having all that done at once was really the, the best way to go about it. So if I know going in the future, I have other things that need to be done much less con, much less worry about it. And, and, and that's just kinda life, you know, especially as you get older there's likelihood that you'll have more things that you have to do.
    What improvements have you noticed?
So I had some issues with chewing before and really had to just chew on one side of my mouth for quite a while until that work was done and that, that solved that problem. And, and, I eat, I eat normally now. I would a hundred percent recommend doing this process to s- sedation dentistry. I wouldn't even think about doing it at a normal dentist office. That's my opinion.
  • LANAP and five root canals

Gum disease that looked healed, an infection bad enough to affect breathing, and a search for a dentist close to home.

    Read the transcript
    What happened with your tooth?
Well, the thing was, I didn't know there was the problem that it was because my gums had actually healed from the periodontal disease. And so they were, they looked good. And I had actually just been to my dentist about six months earlier. 'cause I was going every six months just to get it cleaned because of the periodontal disease and just kind of keeping an eye on that. So it seemed like my gums were healthy and my teeth were somewhat loose. But I don't know, I don't remember if there was an option said about what to do about that.
How much pain were you in?
But every so often I would get a sore either on the lower gum or the top gum, and then it would kind of go away about, I guess it was a year and three months ago, the sore seemed to be consistently really, really bad. And then I started to swell on the top and on the bottom.
Why did you choose this office?
And so since my regular dentist was in western Tennessee, I thought, well, let me find a local one. The swelling got so bad on the top and the bottom that I was having problems breathing. And I was in a bad way. I didn't realize how bad my health was because I had a, a raging infection in my body and it had drained me and I was, I knew I wasn't feeling well, but, you know, you kind of just keep going on and you don't really pay attention.
How much was Dr. Orr able to help?
But I was kind of wanting to do what I could to save him. And so he explained how we were going to go about it 'cause I would need the LANAP or the, for the bone loss. But then I also needed five root canals. So I guess I just considered all the different options and seemed like I was gonna just go with the LANAP and the root canals. And, and it's done really well.
    How was the healing process?
The healing process wasn't difficult and it didn't take really a long time. I was careful about the things I ate because I didn't wanna do any damage to anything that was done, but there weren't really a lot of restrictions and it didn't take a long time. And it seemed like in no time I could feel a physical difference because I guess when you have a lot of infection inside of your body, it's draining you.
    How do you feel now?
I am feeling incredibly better than I was a year and three months ago because I didn't realize how bad I was feeling then. I often would wake up sick to my stomach in, in a headache, which I guess is part of the bacterial living inside of my body. And my energy levels were low and I often was just weak and kind of miserable. And I've pretty much got it seems like I've got all my strength and I'm, I can go and do so many different things. If somebody were to come and ask me if they should have this done, I could highly recommend it. It's like you get your teeth back again and you get your quality of life back again. And so I think I would highly recommend it.

  • Nervous about the dentist

A tooth to be taken out, and a lot of anxiety going in.

I had to have a tooth extracted and I have terrible anxiety but the staff there was very understanding and very gentle. The hygienist was great and Dr. Tindall was amazing — I didn’t feel any pain, they even got me a weighted blanket to calm my anxiety. I do believe I have found a new dentist and a caring one and the staff is great also! Thank all of you for making my experience more pleasant than I ever thought.

  • A smile they had stopped showing

One had a bridge rebuilt. The other had not smiled with confidence in years.

One million percent recommend Winchester Family Dentistry as the best experiences I’ve ever had in my 75 years of major dental needs. I consider Dr. Garrett Orr a MASTER SCULPTOR! I came to him about two years ago after a very major botched six-tooth permanent bridge — my upper front teeth. (Different local dentist.) They were too short and I had gone a year very embarrassed about my ugly smile. Dr. Orr rebuilt my teeth, using my original smiling photos as reference. He nailed it 100! I now proudly smile JUST TO SHOW OFF MY TEETH. Dr. Orr is a fine Christian man. Very friendly and professional. The entire practice is top notch with advanced modern equipment. His staff is also very friendly and efficient. You won’t be disappointed!
